The Mont-Saint-Michel Trail
The association "Les Chemins du Mont-Saint-Michel", founded in 1998, is dedicated to rediscovering, rehabilitating and promoting the ancient pilgrimage routes leading to the famous Norman shrine dedicated to the archangel Saint Michael.
Thanks to its surveys, the association is extending the network of Saint Michael's paths to a number of European countries and renewing the historical links between Mont-Saint-Michel and the major European sites dedicated to the Archangel Michael, by crossing the territories marked by these legendary routes.

PILGRIM TRAIL
This historic route begins at Winchester Cathedral in England and runs through the English countryside to Cherbourg. It then links Normandy with Mont Blanc, marking an ancient cross-Channel pilgrimage route.
CHEMIN DE CHERBOURG
A coastal route through Normandy via Lessay, Coutances and Granville to the Bay of Mont. The route alternates between coastal landscapes and historical heritage.
CHEMIN DE BARFLEUR
Starting at the port of Barfleur, the route takes in the Cotentin hinterland. The route highlights the department's little-known natural sites and historical treasures.
CHEMIN DE CAEN OUISTREHAM
Follows the ancient Roman road from Vieux to Avranches, used by pilgrims since before the year 1000. It links the landscapes of Calvados with the Normandy valleys on the way to Mont.
CHEMIN D'AMIENS
The route starts at Amiens Cathedral, a World Heritage site, and crosses the Picardy plains. It reaches Rouen by crossing the valleys of the Bray region.
CHEMIN DE ROUEN
Stretches across five Normandy departments from Rouen Cathedral to Falaise Castle. This route links large towns and varied countryside before reaching the routes to Mont.
CHEMIN DE PARIS
Starts in the capital and joins the network of Normandy paths to the Mont. It combines urban and rural sections before joining the major historic routes.
CHEMIN D'ORLEANS CHARTRES
Linking the Loire Valley to Normandy, via Chartres Cathedral. The route passes through Le Perche, the forests of Orléans and Mortain.
CHEMIN DU MONTE GARGANO
Crosses Italy from the sanctuary of Monte Sant'Angelo to France. It is one of the longest traditional pilgrimage routes to the Mount.
CHEMIN DE TOURS
Known as the «Grand Chemin montois», it leaves Tours via Le Mans and Mayenne. The signposted route extends into the Alpes Mancelles towards Le Mont.
PLANTAGENET WAY
A signposted European route linking several regions of France on the way to Santiago de Compostela. It illustrates the long-standing cooperation between historic pilgrimage networks.
CHEMIN DE L'ATLANTIQUE
A «shared» route linking Bordeaux to the major routes to Mont Blanc and Compostela. It links the Atlantic territories with historic religious routes.
CHEMIN DE SAINT-MALO
It starts in Saint-Malo, crosses Brittany and then joins the Normandy routes to Mont-Saint-Malo. It combines Breton maritime heritage and pilgrimage routes.

Walking the paths of
Mont-Saint-Michel
The pilgrimage was made by most of the kings of France until the end of the 16th century, including Saint Louis, Philippe-le-Bel, Louis XI and François I, as well as by the most important figures in the kingdom. But it was mainly made by people of modest means and children.
The end of the 19th century saw the restoration of the abbey, which has been classified as a historic monument, and the return of worship and pilgrimages to Saint Michael. Now a major tourist attraction, the home of the Archangel attracts millions of visitors every year.
