In a few words

This work, divided into four parts, is an in-depth study of the various aspects of the Michaele cult in Campania. In the first part, the author describes the Michaels' presence in the region, and in particular the numerous caves which, like the one on Monte Gargano, were dedicated to the Archangel, especially along the Salerno-Avellino-Benevento route. This is followed by an examination of the hagiographic data in which the presence of the Archangel is mentioned, sometimes in his role as custos, sometimes with his traditional attributes.
In addition to its interest in the cult of Saint Michael in southern Italy, which is closely linked to Monte Gargano, the model for Mont-Saint-Michel, this book sheds new light on the pilgrimage of the monk Bernard, the first pilgrim to the Mont in 866-867, who went to Mont Tombe on his return from the Holy Land, Monte Gargano and Rome. His description of the various shrines he visited is particularly valuable. A fresco discovered in the grotto of Olevano Sul Tusciano (12th-13th centuries), near Salerno, identified with that of Mons Aureus, depicts him and his two companions kneeling before the Archangel. This is believed to be the first image of a pilgrim from Monte, praying at the foot of the Archangel...
