{"id":161,"date":"2007-02-02T16:07:28","date_gmt":"2007-02-02T15:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.lescheminsdumontsaintmichel.com\/les-chemins-d-italie\/"},"modified":"2024-08-15T23:24:41","modified_gmt":"2024-08-15T21:24:41","slug":"les-chemins-d-italie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lescheminsdumontsaintmichel.com\/en\/les-chemins-d-italie\/","title":{"rendered":"From Monte to Monte Gargano (Puglia)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following in the footsteps of the first known pilgrim, the Frankish monk Bernard, who linked Monte Gargano to Mont-Saint-Michel around 867-868.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A little history<\/strong><br \/>\nHere are the major historical milestones that we find indicated in <em>The Path Guide<\/em> by Charles Estienne :<br \/>\n- the Grand Chemin montais, one of the oldest and best-documented routes linking Mont-Saint-Michel to Le Mans (72),<br \/>\n- the clearest choice was then to reach Lyon via Orl\u00e9ans (45), Saint-Beno\u00eet-sur-Loire (45), Gien (45), Nevers (58) and Charlieu (69)<br \/>\n- then Chamb\u00e9ry before crossing the Alps at Mont-Cenis to reach the Sacra di San Michele, Rome and Monte Sant'Angelo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your path today<\/strong><br \/>\nThe itinerary below is presented in the North-South direction, from Normandy to Italy, but you only need to read it in the opposite direction to reach Mont-Saint-Michel. It was designed in the direction of Mont-Saint-Michel, but the presentation in this direction illustrates the gradual completion of this European itinerary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Mont-Saint-Michel to Orl\u00e9ans via Chartres, 352 km<\/strong><br \/>\nIn the past, one option was to go via Le Mans to Orl\u00e9ans via Saint-Calais (72) and Vend\u00f4me (41). This route is still being researched in the field,<\/p>\n<p>Today, from Le Mont, take the <a href=\"\/en\/article 59\/\"><strong>Chemin de Chartres<\/strong><\/a> via Mortain, Domfront, Carrouges, Alen\u00e7on, Bell\u00eame, Nogent-le-Rotrou, Thiron-Cardais and Illiers-Combray, already defined and published.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CHEMIN DE CHARTRES A ORLEANS, 81 km<\/strong><br \/>\nSince the end of 2020, it has been possible to <strong>to Orl\u00e9ans via Chartres<\/strong> by a new four-stage signposted route (81 km) crossing the Beauce via Voves, Org\u00e8res-en-Beauce (28) and Sougy (45). Jargeau - Orl\u00e9ans<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>IN ITALY,<\/strong> you will follow the <a href=\"http:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Via_Francigena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Via Francigena<\/a>literally the \"Way of the French\" but also the \"Way of France\".<br \/>\nIt is in fact<strong>a network of routes<\/strong> used by travellers from Frankish lands on their way to Rome (and later Jerusalem). This network dates back to antiquity and was inspired by the ancient Roman roads. The most famous of these is the route taken by Sigeric, Archbishop of Cantorbury, who went to Rome to seek his <em>pallium<\/em> in 990, which has become the basis of the Council of Europe's cultural itinerary.<br \/>\n<br \/>\n- See our section on <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.lescheminsdumontsaintmichel.com\/cammini-di-san-michele-italie\/\">i cammini di san Michele<\/a><br \/>\nThe Milan-based association <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icaminantes.com\/les-chemins-du-mont-saint-michel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I Caminantes<\/a><\/em> has compiled a single file showing the route of the Via Francigena from Val di Susa, just outside Mont Cenis, to Monte Sant'Angelo, with the accommodation contacted in early 2021.<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/en\/IMG\/kml\/torino_-_monte_sant_angelo_-_accoglienze_vf.kml\/\">From Val di Susa to Monte Gargano<\/a><\/p>\n<p>- To visit La Sacra di San Michele, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacradisanmichele.com\/fra\/test_display\/index\/id\/16\/cat\/8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here<\/a><br \/>\n<br \/>\n- The Via Francigena that crosses Piedmont is partly described in Monica d'Atti's guidebooks, available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.confraternitadisanjacopo.it\/Francigena\/benvenuto.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Confraternita di San Jacopo di Compostella website <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are some websites to help you on the Via Francigena:<br \/>\n- the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.viefrancigene.org\/fr\/piedi\/ \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Association of the Via Francigena (Associazione Europea delle Vie Francigene)<\/a> (AEVF), promoter of the Council of Europe's Via Francigena Cultural Route<br \/>\n- the<a href=\"http:\/\/francigena-international.org\/fr_FR\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Via Francigena Association<\/a>which is ceasing its activities and merging with the AEVF in 2020<\/p>\n<p>\n- To visit Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.castelsantangelo.com\/castello.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click here<\/a><br \/>\n<br \/>\n- Click to visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montesantangelo.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monte Sant'Angelo town website<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.santuariosanmichele.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the sanctuary<\/a><\/p>\n<p>- Another solution is to follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.camminodisanmichele.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cammino di San Michele<\/a>who wants to follow the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/viewer?mid=1UFvGQL-Jheh4nSvVi8TLV5lNXSzdXEw&#038;ll=43.86828572029913%2C11.129400126796382&#038;z=12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linea micaelica<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>By bike<\/h2>\n<p>From Mont-Saint-Michel to Chartres, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veloscenie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">la V\u00e9losc\u00e9nie<\/a> has already been laid out and corresponds almost exactly to the footpath signposted by the association<br \/>\nfrom Chartres to Orl\u00e9ans, the three stages through the Beauce region can be adapted for cyclists<br \/>\nFrom Orl\u00e9ans to Nevers, follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loireavelo.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Loire by bike<\/a><br \/>\nA continuous green route via Decize and Paray-le-Monial to Charlieu (69)<br \/>\nfrom Charlieu to Lyon, adapt the walking route described above<br \/>\nthen from Lyon, follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.viarhona.com\/itineraire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Via Rhona<\/a> to Chamb\u00e9ry, then the cycle track the road to Mont-Cenis<br \/>\nIn Italy, the Via Francigena, which now links Puglia and Monte Gargano https:\/\/www.viefrancigene.org\/fr\/bicicletta\/, offers a wide range of routes.<\/p>\n<h2>A few testimonials from pilgrim walkers may also be of great help.<\/h2>\n<p>Some share their adventures on the internet.
